Read Until You Understand was something Farrah Jasmine Griffins dad always told her. Mixing her personal history with the legacies of Afro-American writers throughout the centuries, the author has really written a most interesting book. From 18th century enslaved writer Phillis Wheatley to James Baldwin and the great Toni Morrison she adores. The chapters are centered around certain themes which makes the book feel more like a story told to you than a history book about literature. It is both, in a way. Every quote, every book mentioned shows you that Griffin knows her stuff and it’s a pleasure to learn from her.
