Toni Morrison, among many others, said she was inspired by reading Achebe. His books were placed in a different environment then the American post-slavery reality and his writing voice was different too from what she was used to.
Things fall apart tells the story of Okonkwo, a great warrior who has been exiled from his village for many years and upon his return finds that everything is changing with the coming of the Europeans. Achebe wrote a layered tale that you will remember long after you close the book.
Chinua Achebe (1930-2013) was a writer and a poet and gained widespread acknowledgment for African literature outside of Africa.
Take a look at his essay collection Africa's Tarnished Name.
