In this near-future dystopian novel, the mysterious 'unraveling' has caused power outages, national crisis and white supremacists getting free reign. A group of neighbours seek refuge in the old plantation home of Thomas Jefferson, where they are safe until they aren't...
Narrator Da'Naisha is a descendant of Sally Hemings, a black woman who carried some of Jefferson's children, a truth long denied. Through Da'Naisha's eyes the book explores race relations in a way that's natural within the storyline.
I later found out that the original book contains 5 short stories as well; this version with just the novel has been published for the European market. Nonetheless it's an interesting read that treats the past of the plantation head-on.
